Target: To influence zoo-based research directions, an analysis of research outputs by the world’s major zoos will be undertaken, culminating in widespread publication and dissemination of findings, and subsequent active facilitation of new research by zoos.
Zoos have changed significantly over the last few decades, becoming centres of conservation, research and education. However, there are distinct differences between the quality and quantity of work done by individual zoos in these areas.
CIRCLE research is investigating the involvement of zoos in conservation and research, as well as the factors that affect the quantity and quality of their research and conservation projects, on both a national and a worldwide scale. This work is being used to improve the contribution made by zoos to scientific research and to the conservation of biodiversity.
- Assessing the worldwide contribution of zoos to scientific research;
- Assessing the financial and practical contribution of British zoos to field conservation.
